Team Pony Boy will have a booth at the NARHA conference coming up on Nov. 18-21 in Fort Worth. The "Horse Handling for Horse Leaders" Therapeutic Riding clinic was so successful that Susie Rehr from Special Strides wrote an article for an upcoming Hippotherapy journal. I've been contacted by other facilities that want the clinic at their place, as well.

We're working on the inclusion of the horse as a member of the therapy team (not just a tool) and the necessity of understanding equine behaviors and needs by "non-horsey" type people (well, and "horsey" people as well).

I hope to have the video edited by then to show in the booth. It'll be rough, but we have it. And Pony will be there on Thursday during the Conference, for anyone in Texas. No demos, but he's available to answer questions and talk about the clinic format.

I LOVE IT!

That is wonderful! So glad that PB is getting known and publicity in this area. Please keep us posted as things go on.

From the Velveteen Rabbit
"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very nappy. But these things don't matter at all. Because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

I can't tell you how happy I am that this has finally happening! I am an OT and a former program director for a NARHA accredited center. Having practiced hippotherapy for 5 years, I can't stress it enough, the horse leader must be properly trained...not only in how to lead...but...as mentioned, equine behavior as well. I developed a "leader training" course for the center because it was my feeling that too many therapeutic centers do not take the time to properly educate and train the horse leaders which is a disservice to the client and the horse. Thank you.

I cross posted this announcement on my Facebook page. I had to edit because the status update only allows for 420 characters. Here's to a little free additional exposure. Keep us posted on the response to the booth and new format!!

Today is the first day of the NARHA Conference; these are some of the greatest people I've ever met. Everyone sincerely likes everyone else and I've met wonderful people.

I'll report in tomorrow on how things are going.

I didn't say they were the greatest people -- I said "some of the greatest people." Other than the Pony Posse, horse people can sometimes be a little uppity. The therapy community seesms to focus outside themselves rather than on themselves.

You haven't met Joy Rittenhouse or Christiane Dupuis have you? Cric has a very thick French-Swiss accent. They run the program I used to spend a lot of time at...

If I did meet them, I'm sorry but I don't remember.

Sandrad from the message board did come by to help out for two days and what a doll! She's a lovely person. I really enjoyed her company in the booth, 'cause it wasn't the best attended of these conferences I've been to but then the Therapeutic Riding community seems like it's been suffering with the loss of income from both clients and funders with the poor economy.

I did get the chance to talk to Boo McDaniel from NH (Pony Farm) and boy, are there some interesting things in the not-too-distant future.

We'll keep everyone posted.

I'm in Mobile, AL for the night (left Ft. Worth at 4:30 this morning) and I'll be home late tomorrow afternoon. My sweetie (OH) hasn't messed things up too much at the house since I've been gone, but he has admitted to the kitchen sink being clogged and we'll need a plumber on Monday. If that's the only thing, he's doing great.
